The Bed Bug: The Guest From Hell!!
Bedbugs are a nightmare and in many parts of the country have already developed an immunity to pyrethroids. I have done several motel rooms in the past and can tell you although this is a high dollar service it all comes down to being very detailed in your inspection and treatment. For example, the average motel room requires 3-4 hours of inspection and treatment.

Bed Bugs Along The Crevices Of A Bed Mattress
Steamed heat works best in areas you can get away with it. Steam cleaning carpets, (especially carpet corners and edges) about every crack and crevices you can think of. Removing pictures off the wall, putting mattress covers on every “new” mattress and dismantling every piece of furniture and doing 100% coverage and treating every crevice and I mean every crevice. Neglect one area and the whole invasion thing just takes off like you never treated the place.
The adult bedbug is known to be able to go for over 6 months without feeding, and when deprived of food may live for a year and a half.(this means bring a living human host in 1/1/2 years and suddenly they found a blood meal). Eggs are deposited into hidden crevices by the female, and normally hatch within about 1 week. But, in cooler temperatures this may take a month of more.

Bed Bugs Along A Face
As far as chemicals I have used Phantom, or a Eco Smart Botanical . Pesticides work very poorly on the eggs and that means physically removing every egg. Mattresses, pillows, upholstered furniture are thrown away and replaced with covers and made of Steri-Fab and vinyl upholstery (easier to treat next time); Replacing carpeted floors with tile will keep the maintenance costs down next time their is a re-infestation. Fumigating a home or building may not even kill all the eggs.
As far as equipment Tyvek suits, taped close, gloves. A tool box that includes every possible screw driver, torx, you name it; box wrenches, socket set and at least a two man team since the job involves flipping over every piece of furniture and doing detailed work.
This work is very labor intensive. Customers want guarantees and you to return for re-occurrences which can be something as simple as last nights guest bringing them with them from the nights stay at another motel. If you are thinking of doing this as a business, think it over, lots of re-inspections and follow-ups to stay ahead of the problems.
If its a home, just about every upholstered furniture can be suspect especially if someone moved from the bed to the couch to sleep because they could not handle the bed bugs in the bedroom. We got out of the bed bug business when we realized it involved dedicated crews ;but we basically did motels that were a revolving door for re-infestation. Homes on the other hand were profitable if they agreed to replacing all upholstered furniture and not stay in motels and thoroughly inspect items from guests who stayed in a motel on the way to Florida.
DDT fixed this once and now in the days of IPM and less use of pesticides as a industry this has caused a resurgence of bed bugs.
